April is Global Child Nutrition Month. While the focus of this month is to ensure every child in the world has access to proper food and nutrition, we also wanted to bring attention to the importance of your child’s nutrition in relation to their dental health.

 

As you probably know, sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay in children.  What you may not know is that some type of sugar exists in nearly every food and drink we consume, including milk and certain fruits and veggies. The American Dental Association recommends taking time to read all nutrition labels before purchasing groceries or a meal to serve to your children.

 

The best way to promote good dental health through your child’s nutrition is to feed them a well-balanced diet with a variety foods from all five food groups. In addition to a well-balanced diet, you should also:

  • Serve only nutritious snacks, such as apples or carrots.
  • Limit sweets to mealtime desserts.
  • Make sure your children drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid putting sugary beverages like juice in infant bottles.
  • Serve bedtime and nap-time bottles before putting your child in bed.
